With so much local history and fun things to do with the family, Scituate is a great place to spend the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Paragon Carousel on Nantasket Beach has been operating for more than 80 years and is one of the few remaining “Grand” carousels in the U.S. today. With four rows of 66 intricately carved horses and two rare Roman chariots, as well as 35 original paintings, 36 cherubs and 18 goddesses looking down on you, it is as mesmerizing as it is fun. The museum and museum shop enhance the experience, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about Nantasket Beach’s distinct history as a destination for the rich and famous in the 1900s.
The lighthouse has been a safeguard for the Scituate Harbor since its activation in 1811, even playing a role in the War of 1812. In 1994, the light was relit for the first time in 134 years. Tours of the historic landmark include more than twenty graphic panels, the recently-renovated utility room, and more.
For a first-hand experience of American history and tradition, take the family to Plimoth Plantation. The museum tells the iconic story of Plymouth Colony through storytelling and engaging and experiential outdoor and indoor learning environments. This includes a full-scale reproduction of The Mayflower and re-creations of a 17th-Century English Village and the Wampanoag Homesite.
The New England Harvest Feast at Plimoth Plantation, which includes two-day admission to the museum, offers guests an opportunity to step back in time for a family-style dinner. The two-course meal features all of the stuffings, including cider, turkey, fish, cabbage, sweet pudding, cheesecake, and more.
